Ethereum RWA Market Surpasses $20 Billion — Tokenized Treasuries and Private Equity Hit Record

Real World Assets (RWA) tokenized on Ethereum crossed the $20 billion milestone this month — an 8× increase from $2.5 billion at the start of 2025 and cementing Ethereum as the dominant blockchain for institutional tokenization. The surge is driven by growing institutional demand for on-chain exposure to traditional financial instruments: tokenized US Treasury bills represent the largest category at $12.3 billion, followed by private credit at $4.8 billion, real estate at $2.1 billion, and private equity at $0.8 billion. BlackRock's BUIDL fund has become the largest tokenized Treasury product at $4.5 billion in AUM, having surpassed Franklin Templeton's BENJI fund in March. The milestone is significant for Ethereum's monetary value narrative: RWA protocols generate substantial gas fees, ETH staking yields have stabilized above 4.2%, and the growing institutional use of Ethereum as settlement infrastructure creates sticky demand that is fundamentally different from speculative trading activity. Analysts note that if the current growth trajectory continues, on-chain RWA on Ethereum could exceed $100 billion by 2027 — creating a financial system where the line between traditional finance and DeFi becomes increasingly blurred. The forthcoming Glamsterdam upgrade's 78% gas fee reduction is expected to further accelerate RWA adoption by dramatically reducing the cost of on-chain settlement.
