How liquidation price is calculated
With isolated margin, a position is liquidated when the loss eats the initial margin down to the maintenance margin.
Long: Liquidation = Entry × (1 − 1/Leverage + Maintenance margin)
Short: Liquidation = Entry × (1 + 1/Leverage − Maintenance margin)
Example: long BTC at 80,000 with 10x leverage and 0.5% maintenance margin. Liquidation = 80,000 × (1 − 0.1 + 0.005) = 72,400, 9.5% below entry. Your stop has to sit above that.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between liquidation price and stop loss?
A stop loss is a level you choose to exit with a known loss. Liquidation is where the exchange closes the position and takes the whole margin. Your stop should always come before liquidation.
Why does my exchange show a slightly different liquidation price?
Exchanges use tiered maintenance margin by position size, charge a liquidation fee and use the mark price. This calculator uses one fixed rate, so it is an estimate.
Does higher leverage move liquidation closer?
Yes. At 10x a move of about 9.5% against you liquidates the position; at 50x it is only about 1.5%.
