How PnL and ROE are calculated
PnL is the price difference times quantity, minus fees on both sides. ROE is PnL divided by the initial margin, so leverage raises ROE but not PnL.
Long PnL = (Exit − Entry) × Quantity − Fees
ROE = PnL ÷ (Entry × Quantity ÷ Leverage)
Example: long 0.1 BTC from 80,000 to 82,000 with a 0.05% fee per side and 10x leverage. Profit before fees is 200 USDT, fees are 8.10 USDT, net profit 191.90 USDT. Margin is 800 USDT, so ROE is about 24%.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PnL and ROE?
PnL is the actual money made or lost. ROE is that result as a share of the margin you posted. With the same PnL, higher leverage means a larger ROE, in profit and in loss.
Why does my exchange show a different ROE?
Many exchanges show ROE before fees and use the mark price. This calculator subtracts fees on both sides, so it is closer to what you actually receive.
Does it include funding?
No. If you hold through funding times, your real result also gains or loses the funding payments.
